The poppy, which grows in regions with hot and dry summers and low rainfall in winter, is not very difficult to grow. It gives product once a year. The purpose of poppy production is for the medical sector, where almost 90 percent of the entire crop is used. The homeland of the poppy is the Eastern Mediterranean. Our country ranks second after India in poppy production and exports this product in high quantities. About 30 species of poppy, of which there are about 50 different species, are grown in Turkey.
It is used in the decoration of bread and bakery products and has been carefully cleaned so that it does not contain any foreign matter.
